My First Mentor: A High School Friend Who Believed in Me

The first time I ever walked into a weight room was my senior year of high school. I had never lifted weights before, and I was the weakest one in the class. Girls were lifting more than me, and I wanted out.

But I ended up paired with a friend who was a football player. He had years of experience in the weight room, and instead of looking down on me, he built me up. He critiqued my form, told me when to go heavier, and encouraged me to push for those extra reps.

He was patient, consistent, and steady. He showed me I belonged there. Because of him, I walked away from that semester more confident, with the skills to walk into a gym and know what I was doing. Without his mentorship, I might never have stuck with it.


My Second Mentor: A Boss Who Pushed Me Harder

A year later, I was working at Pizza Pipeline when I met another mentor, my boss Jason. He was strong not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too. He carried an unstoppable growth mindset that rubbed off on me.

Jason encouraged me to push myself harder, to lift heavier, to train to failure, and to go all-in. But he also mentored me in life outside the gym. He told me to stop wasting time with negative friends and start taking responsibility for my own growth.

That perspective changed everything. Jason showed me that fitness wasn’t just about muscles. It was about building mental toughness and creating the habits that would fuel personal growth in every area of my life.


The Lesson: Mentorship Matters

Looking back, I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without those two mentors. And that’s the biggest lesson I can pass on to anyone starting their fitness journey. Don’t try to do it alone.

Fitness is simple, but it’s not easy. Doubts will creep in. You’ll wonder if you’re doing the right exercises, eating the right foods, or making enough progress. That’s when a mentor steps in.

A mentor calms the noise. They remind you that you’re on the right track. They celebrate your wins and push you when you’re ready for more. And sometimes, just knowing someone else is rooting for you is enough to get you to show up on the hard days.
